What Is Zoned Mattress Support?

Zoned support changes the resistance or support level across different sections of a mattress instead of treating the entire sleep surface as one uniform zone.

Quick take

  • Zoning can be built into foam, coils or air systems.
  • A zoned mattress is not automatically adjustable.
  • Airpedic markets multi-zone air control on relevant configurations.

Fixed zoning

Manufacturers can vary foam cuts, densities or coil characteristics across the mattress. The zones are built in and usually cannot be changed.

Adjustable zoning

An air-based system can divide chambers so selected regions can be changed after purchase. Airpedic describes dedicated lumbar adjustment in its six-chamber system.

What zoning cannot promise

A product feature should not be treated as a guaranteed treatment for pain or spinal conditions. Comfort and support preferences are individual.

Shopping questions

Ask how many zones are independently controllable, whether both sleepers can adjust them, and whether the controls affect firmness globally or by region.
