Adjustable Firmness vs Adjustable Base: What’s the Difference?
Adjustable firmness changes how strongly the mattress supports you. An adjustable base changes your body position by raising or lowering sections of the bed. They solve different problems and can sometimes be used together.

Adjustable firmness
Usually achieved with air pressure or changeable internal components. The sleep surface stays broadly flat while its support response changes.
Adjustable base
A motorized foundation raises the head and/or feet. It changes geometry, not the mattress’s internal firmness.
When you want both
A couple might want independent firmness plus split or split-top position control. Check mattress/base compatibility before assuming the combination works.
Common buying mistake
A retailer saying a mattress is “adjustable-base compatible” does not mean the mattress itself has adjustable firmness.
